Building a
Culture of Peace - Through Fair Trading.
WHAT'S NEW!!
It is hard to believe that 2010 is our
7th year of operation. In that time we have sold over 20 000 Fair
Trade Certified balls and in 2009 we saw a big increase in people and
organizations buying our soccer balls to take or send to projects in
poorer and war affected countries. We provide them at our cost for use in
schools and orphanages along with the used ones we collect, in over 36
countries. The profits from our sales have funded peace building and
youth programs especially in Sierra Leone. Since we are a service club of
the YMCA, we operate with volunteer help we are dependent on a large
number of helpers across Canada. If you would like to sell our sports
balls in your community, please contact us for details.
In 2008, we phased out the Team
balls with covers made of PVC, polyvinyl chloride, because the chlorine
in it is toxic to the environment. These types of balls have been banned
in several countries of Europe and we are voluntarily following suit. The
replacement balls will be Team Plus balls having a covering of
polyurethane, longer lasting and safer when disposed of.
However you should not need
to throw away good used balls. Send them overseas for kids who may never
have had a real soccer ball to play with.
Support our "Let the Children
Play" program to supply soccer balls and other equipment to
children in poor and war affected countries. Find out how you can
participate and where the balls go.
Ask us for the new wholesale price list if you are a
soccer league, school or retailer interested in selling Fair Trade
Certified sports balls.
We changed our name to Fair World
Sports in 2007, to better explain that we are interested in
selling our sports balls to help build a better world for all. Any
funds we raise will go to support youth related projects in
poor and war-affected countries.
YSC Fair World
Sports is a national project of the Y Service Clubs of Canada which has
established a network of Y Service Clubs, individuals and community
groups, to sell Fair Trade sports balls across Canada. Our goal is to
promote the principles of Fair Trade and the elimination of child labour
as well as to support financially, worthy peace building projects around
the world. Fair World Sports is based in Ottawa and operated by Y
FOCUS-Ottawa who operates the overall project on behalf of all the Y Service
Clubs in Canada and maintains this web site for them.
Note: The term Sports
Ball includes balls for soccer, rugby, basketball, volleyball, beach
volleyball and futsal.
In buying our
Fair Trade certified products, you have a high quality, long lasting
sports ball, hand stitched by workers in a company which has promised to
pay them decent wages and employ no children.
Your support
makes all this possible because in the price of the ball is a Fair Trade
premium that is used to provide better than average wages plus additional
health and educational benefits to the workers and their families.
The funds raised
by the sale of Fair Trade certified sports balls will be used by Y
Service Clubs to support projects with children in other countries, especially
where there has been war and where education and playing sports are
important tools in building a culture of peace.
If
you would like to get involved in Fair Trade activity, have the current
retail or wholesale price lists or to have more information about Y
Service Clubs, contact Dave Hall at (613) 225-3882 or davidfhall@magma.ca .
