Let
the Children Play
A
Canada-wide project to provide soccer balls and other sports and school
equipment for use in poor and war affected countries. We will collect used
balls and other equipment as well as cash to purchase new Fair Trade certified
soccer balls and educational supplies, for schools, orphanages, refugee
camps and community youth programs.
You can participate as an individual or
family and get your church school, YMCA or service club involved too.
OR you can mobilise groups to come together and run a community-
wide program.
Here are some ideas and resources for you
to consider. Let us know if you come up with new ones to share with others.
PERSONAL ACTION.
In conjunction with your local school, church, service club, YMCA or
other community group, there are smaller activities that can be undertaken.
For example:
- Check our list of the Candian agencies we are supporting and make
a contribution directly to them. You can also choose your own locally
based international aid agency and support them. Just let us know what
you choose to do and how much you collect. We will keep a tally on this
web site.
- Set up drop off boxes for donations of balls and equipment at locations
around your city or town. If you do not have an agency locally who can
use your soccer equipment, we may be able to suggest a contact close to
you.
COMMUNITY ACTION
Larger groups or the whole community can develope a plan of action
to meet your local needs and interest.
Here is a suggested overall plan for a year:
January to June: Develop and promote
a program with a variety of events and activities.
Decide on projects to support, by contacting Y international
partners, local NGO’s and Brother Clubs. Develop
Fact Sheets on the projects for publicity.
Line up community supporters - sports leagues, YMCA,
schools and churches.
Plan and hold special events – see below for suggested
activities especially during Fair Trade Weeks in May and other
major sporting events.
Collect and store donations of sports equipment
– find a good storage area .
Solicit cash donations – set up a special bank account.
July – December:
Sort and box donations of sports goods.
Arrange for materials to be shipped by project sponsors
and volunteers.
Document and evaluate the results
Decide on future actions.
Some activities to consider.
Sell Fair Trade sports balls with some of the proceeds set aside to
buy and send new balls overseas to the selected projects. For example,
$10 will purchase a new Fair Trade child’s ball for an orphanage or refugee
camp. We will also provide our chidren's Fair Trade soccer balls for $10
each as long as they are going to children in poor and war affected countries.
Hold Fair Trade sports tournaments and provide the balls for one or
all of the following sports, soccer, indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball
and beach volleyball.
Celebrate Fair Trade Weeks in early May with a Fair Trade Fair inviting
local groups to display and sell their products. Also hold a Fair Trade
Fair during the pre-Christmas season.
Encourage your YMCA, school board and local churches to become Fair
Trade communities and adopt ethical purchasing policies.
